I have read in many places that rag curls are the best way to become curly like Shirley. Not true. Rag curls look gorgeous, but will end up giving you a curl a la Mary Pickford or a girl in one of those Jane Austen telemovies :).

The best way to achieve curls just like Shirley's is to use pin curls. They take about the same amount of time (for me, somewhere between and hour and two hours. I don't know where Shirley's mother found the patience to do it every night!) and will give you a shorter ringlet. Plus, it's the method Shirley used herself!

First, why not use a vinegar rinse like Shirley did once a week to make your hair manageable and shiny? It is also good for removing build-up from shampoo and conditioner. I've read different recipes regarding the proportion of water to vinegar (some do not dilute the vinegar at all), but generally they go something like this: boil water, add vinegar, stir and wait for the solution to cool. It is generally recommended that you use Apple Cider vinegar. Pour over hair after it has been shampooed. Be very careful not to get it in your eyes, and remember to rinse thouroughly so you don't walk around smelling of vinegar!

Wait a just little while before setting your curls. They should be done on damp hair but if your hair is dripping wet the hair is more difficult to curl and the curls will not dry properly (so they will not be set in the morning).

When you are ready to curl your hair, wind a small section around a tube shape, such as a permanent marker (this is a good shape and size and the hair should slide off easily). You can use styling products for extra hold if you like. Once the hair is wound all the way up to the scalp, secure it with a clip. It takes a little while to get the knack of it (tip: layered hair works best)! My favourite to use is a snap clip (the ones that are round at one end and click shut when you press them). However you will need at the very least thirty clips, so bobby pins are very good. The model in the picture is using curling clips; I don't like these at all as they do not offer much support and are more expensive than bobby pins.

(Tip: As a guide to the length your curls will turn out, Shirleys hair in her earliest style was shoulder length when uncurled.)

You can use a spray of water every now and then to keep the hair damp. Once you have done your entire head it might be a good idea to give it some hair spray just to keep it together. It is not essential to put your hair in a net but it does help keep the curls nicely set. Sleep on your curls...they do take a couple of hours to set!

The next morning, you can give your hair a quick buzz with a hairdryer to make them last longer, but again this is not essential. If you would like curls like Shirley had when she was older (in bunches at the side of the head), now is the oppurtunity to do that. Brush the curls into two groups and secure with hair elastics or pins. A ribbon can look cute! If you are a bit 'old' (ie. over 8 years! LOL) to wear this style but still want to (like me!) they can look more 'appropriate' pulled back into a ponytail at the back or on top of your head. Enjoy! >
